Stop making so many superhero movies

Superheroes and Hollywood are a match that is only natural and obvious, but with so many films being released in such little time, the Marvel and DC superhero machine is no longer making films with any substance. Think of what you do every time you watch a superhero movie in theatres; you stay to see if something happens after the credits. Then, studios slip in a sneak peek at what will happen next; a sequel. Great, right? Not anymore. Now, fans flood theatres to watch what they think is a movi

Mesa remembers beloved professor Jeff Berry

Jeff ‘El Jefe’ Berry, a Spanish professor here at Mesa College, died on Oct. 10. Berry suffered from stage IV Lymphoma, a diagnosis he received in January, according to his Gofundme page. He was 56. Berry was a well-known educator and humanitarian at Mesa, having several stories written about him by The Mesa Press for his charity work; he donated toys, clothing, furniture, and his time to orphanages in Ensenada and Rosarito, Mexico. A Gofundme page, put together by his children in late June to

Media coverage of mass shootings needs to change

The tragic loss of 58 lives in the Las Vegas mass shooting will leave a mark on this country, one that many hope will be a wake up call in order to produce legislation calling for “commonsense” gun laws, however, mainstream media must also do its part in covering these tragedies responsibly. It seems as though it should be a no-brainer, murder and violence should not be glorified by the news media; although, considering how many sadistic murderers that can be named at the drop of a hat, the con

New Netflix show ‘American Vandal’ is deeper, funnier, and smarter than expected

The Netflix machine has churned out “American Vandal,” a mockumentary that follows Dylan Maxwell, played by Jimmy Tatro, a high school slacker who claims he was framed for spray painting penises on 27 cars in his school staff parking lot. Without actually taking the time to watch the show, it comes off as just another true crime/mystery series like “Making A Murderer,” only with a funnier plot. However, the laughs are not what made this show great, it was everything else viewers did not expect

Equifax was hacked twice, possibly affecting 143 million, and didn’t inform the public promptly

Equifax, one of three of the world’s largest credit reporting agencies, has now admitted to have been hit by a second cyberattack by the same hackers from before, as reported by Bloomberg, only this time, it happened five months earlier than the previously reported one. Urgent though the occurrence of a cyberattack may be, it still begs the question, why are Equifax consumers learning about this incident six months later? Especially when the total number of people affected, approximately 143 mi

Queens of The Stone Age explore new territory better left untouched with “Villains”

Queens of The Stone Age have released their latest album, “Villains,” which brings a new but stale sound for the band, thanks to their collaboration with producer Mark Ronson, better known for working with artists like Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga. With only a few exceptions, “Villains” is mediocre and forgettable, and unlike previous albums like 2002’s “Songs For The Deaf” where intense drums and guitar riffs electrified the ears of listeners, this one offers nothing new in terms of originality. E

Mesa, SDSU, and UCSD students- beware of possible scam

Earlier this semester, The Mesa Press received a letter from a student named Mel, who requested that we investigate a flyer posted around campus advertising enrollment in a biomedical research certificate (BRC) program. The letter read as follows, “How about U guys doing investigative reporting on this ad all over Mesa + UCSD + SDSU? They do not answer the phone. I asked for info about scholarships because they offer it on their (website). They responded for a demand for $1723. My bio prof. say

Alien Covenant, the prequel fans have been waiting for

Sequels, prequels, remakes, and reboots have been taking over the box office for quite some time now. Many recycled blockbuster ideas from Hollywood’s lackluster of imagination are quickly forgotten or lost in translation from the original, however, “Alien: Covenant,” is a film that offers much more than the five before it, making it one of the better installments of the franchise. Set just 10 years after “Prometheus,” this movie follows space travelers who have left Earth in search of a more

The North Korea situation is nothing new

The month of April had no shortage of terrifying headlines about North Korea, and unless you’ve been living under a rock, it’s been the biggest thing in international news. In short, this is basically what happened last month: president Trump made a few tweets condemning North Korea in mid-April and also claimed to have sent the USS Carl Vinson strike group to the coast of the Korean peninsula. The latter turned out to be a “miscommunication,” although now it is believed that the strike group h
